Port Matilda, Pennsylvania, is one of a string of small towns in Bald Eagle Valley in the north-central portion of Centre County.
This quaint community, population 600, offers modest homes and a comfortable main street with easy access to State College. With the recent completion of Interstate 99, the borough is less than a 20-minute drive from Penn State’s University Park campus.
Settled in 1836 and laid out in 1850, the latter half of the town’s unique name was inspired by its founder’s daughter. The other part is likely from early hopes that the Pennsylvania Canal would reach town. These dreams were dashed when the canal was destroyed by floods and replaced by railroad service. The town thrived, however, as a market center for surrounding communities.
Heading down the valley from Port Matilda to Julian, take notice of the Ridge Soaring Gliderport (which is curently for sale). This is a great place to learn how to fly, or just take in the sights of Happy Valley from thousands of feet in the air.
Arriving in Julian, population 152, you’ll find more country homes arranged on a small street-grid. This area can be accessed from State College via an 11-mile trip over the Julian Pike, which gives inspiring views as you wind your way into town. Julian is considered a gateway to Black Moshannon State Park, which offers many outdoor activities like boating and swimming in the 250-acre Black Moshannon Lake. The park is surrounded by the 190,000-plus acre Moshannon State Forest.
Past Julian lies Unionville and Wingate. Unionville dates to 1848 and sits at the base of two mountain ridges. Between these mountains lies Route 504 – also known as Rattlesnake Pike – which offers some of the most stunning scenery in the county as it winds its way into the foothills of the Allegheny Front. Homes in town are often quaint and affordable – however, take the ride out the Pike and you’ll see some beautiful homes with great views and large lots. If you’re looking for an affordable yet special homesite, this area should be on your list.
As you continue down the valley, you’ll come to Wingate, best known as the home to Bald Eagle Area High School. It also provides a number of amenities to the surrounding communities, including a pizza shop, gas station and other businesses. The village is a short drive to the towns of Milesburg and Bellefonte, which offer even more shopping and dining options.
With a variety of small towns to choose from, Bald Eagle Valley is convenient yet rural. Whether you’re looking for your own quiet small-town retreat or your country dream home, this area is ripe with options.
